As we approach the holiday season it is interesting to question the year that is coming to an end - to take stock of our virtues and vices. It is also a time to make resolutions. In 2017, why not rethink our eating habits that are at the root of real waste?
According to a study published in 2010 by the Value Chain Management Center (VCMC), up to half of the food stored in the refrigerator ends up in the trash.
Beyond the waste of products and the clogging of landfills that contribute to the emission of greenhouse gases, food waste also impacts the environment through unnecessary use of resources such as water, arable land, transport and packaging.
Although food waste is present throughout the production, distribution and the consumption chain, it is possible for you to make a difference just by changing certain habits at home:
By planning out your meals, it is easier to determine what will actually be needed throughout the week. You can also target more effectively the items you specifically need and therefore avoid buying too much. You will be pleasantly surprised to find that in addition to better consuming the food you buy, you will also make substantial savings.
The carrots you bought to snack on have softened? Put them in a soup. The kids are tired of eating clementines and your crate is almost full? Mix them with other fruits and add some yogurt to serve them in a smoothie. You will quickly realize that in re-purposing food, you will reduce your waste while keeping the family well-fed and happy.
Have you spent precious time preparing a delicious meal for the entire household only to end up with half of it uneaten? Instead of throwing the leftovers in the trash, immediately freeze them in individual portions, this way you’ll have a delicious meal to enjoy on a night where you don’t feel like cooking.
